While the risks are real, the LA Chapter is ready to start cleanup efforts as soon as conditions are declared safe. Additionally, the chapter is collaborating with local groups to test how wildfire ash and debris impacts water quality along the coast.
Our volunteer-run Blue Water Task Force program is currently on hold for the sake of the safety, although Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is conducting regular testing.
Surfrider continues to recommend that people take appropriate caution to avoid any water or sand that might have ash or fire debris on or in it, to best protect their own health and safety until more information is available on what contaminants might be present.
