This group of Surfrider Activists from Washington and B.C. gathered on Orcas Island in WA

March 06 Water Quality Training

Over the weekend of March 11th and 12th 2006 over 25 activists from Washington and B.C. gathered at the Beachhaven Resort on Orcas Island for the first of three issues-specific trainings.  The location was beautiful and apropos.  With the region’s inland sea at our back door we spent Saturday hearing from local experts about water quality issues facing our area waters.  We followed their presentations with chapter brainstorming sessions to determine how to translate the information they provided into action to benefit our communities.

Our feature presenters included:

Jeff Engebretson, a microbiologist working with King County

Dr. Randy Lehr, aquatic toxicologist at Grays Harbor College

Linda Lyshall, Regional Liaison with the Puget Sound Action Team

Chapters and regions represented included the Seattle and Northwest Straits Chapters and the Victoria and Vancouver organizing committees.  Additionally, organizers from Port Townsend and Tacoma as well as representative from the Washington Water Trails Association were in attendance.
