April 1st
Chapter Social : Biofoam Surfboard Presentation

Tuesday April
1, 2008: 6-8PM
Event flier
Ned McMahon was the featured speaker at our April 1, 2008 meeting.
Ned is the director of
HomeBlown
US, the manufacturer of Biofoam. Ned shared with us his
passion for greening the surfboard industry. It is well known
that the manufacture of surfboards is environmentally damaging, but
even “green” surfboards aren’t all that green. Next time you
get that magic stick, you need to know what you’re getting.
Where did it come from, how was it made, and most importantly who
made it? Ned stressed the importance of looking for
sustainable materials like Biofoam cores, bamboo & silk deck cloth,
low VOC resins and plywood stringers in making surfboards. He
also discussed the popularization of surfing which has led to an
influx of boards made overseas…. mass produced and shipped thousands
of miles by container ship. He asked that we all look at
purchasing from local shapers who make boards with a heart and soul
craftsmanship you can’t buy from mass marketers. When you
purchase your next board, make a difference. This event was
covered by SoCal News. Both Ned and our chapter chair John
Wingate were interviewed following the presentation.

Ventura River Watershed Reception, Feb. 28 2008
( more photos....)
Guests
of honor of the Ventura River Watershed reception were the members
of the
California Ocean Protection Council (COPC), who were in Ventura
for their February meeting and a
tour of local watershed projects. The reception was a huge
success bringing together more than 60 people representing roughly
10 government agencies and the same number on non-profit groups, all
unified in their objective of healing the watershed and repairing
decades of damage done to the ocean. We would like to thank
each and every attendee. In order to effectively solve
the problems we face in reaching our environmental objectives, we
need to work together and share ideas and
solutions. Thanks also to
J’s Tapas for the outstanding food, drink and hospitality

Solving the
Urban Runoff Problem - (Posted
online - Feb 2008)
A Vision for the Urban Watershed -
Ventura, California
This document outlines an integrated watershed
approach to solving the urban runoff problem in a small
coastal drainage within the City of Ventura. The city
faces increased regulatory pressure for municipal
stormwater, as well as increased water supply concerns
as the city grows in the drought-prone southern
California climate. The integrated approach described is
intended to address these issues as well as provide a
vision for implementing the city’s priority on
protecting the beaches and
natural surroundings as emphasized in the 2005
General Plan.

Endangered
Steelhead Swim Up Casitas’ Fish Ladder
Ojai Valley News - February 1, 2008
Recent rains have enticed endangered steelhead
trout to make a spawning run up the Ventura River. On
Thursday January 31, 2008 the first adult steelhead of
the year was detected by new camera’s installed at
Casitas’ Robles Fish Passage Facility, a fish ladder
completed in December of 2004 to allow steelhead to swim
upstream on the Ventura River.

CALIFORNIA COASTAL
COMMISSION VOTES TO SAVE TRESTLES
Del Mar, CA (February 7, 2008) – After a marathon 14
hour session, the California Coastal Commission voted
8-2 to oppose a planned toll road in Orange County after
finding it was inconsistent with California coastal law.
The ruling was a pivotal decision for both proponents
and opponents of the project, and will likely play a
significant role in the final outcome of whether or not
the road is allowed to be built through the San Mateo
Creek Watershed and San Onofre State Beach Park.

"Tales of the
Ventura River" video now online Visit with the old-timers at
Phil's Barber Shop as they reminisce about the "good
old days" when the Ventura River ran free.
This video is long, but
contains some interesting insight into the history
of the watershed, and how water supply and flood
control altered the historic runs of steelhead and
the natural public trust assets that today, sadly,
balance on the brink of extinction.
The video was produced by
Robin Chilton several years ago, and has been
playing in local cable Channel 6 in Ventura.

Beachscape:
The
Ventura Chapter has done extensive coastal mapping
with a goal of creating a detailed dataset of the
Chapter's coastline. Volunteers were assigned blocks
of shoreline areas and filled out a Beach Characterization
Form for each area, filling out details such as beach
access, outfalls, surf areas, erosion hotspots, natural
areas, etc.
The Chapter
covered Rincon to Port Hueneme.
