Mission Statement of the Texas Upper Coast Chapter The Texas Upper Coast Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our coastal waters, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. The Texas Upper Coast Chapter abides by all principles and the mission of our parent organization, Surfrider Foundation. Conservation: Texas Surfrider recognizes the biodiversity and ecological integrity of the Texas coast is necessary and irreplaceable. Texas Surfrider is committed to preserving natural living and non-living diversity and ecological integrity of the Texas coastal environment. Activism: Texas Surfrider promotes the right of low-impact, free and open access to Texas waves and beaches for all people. Texas Surfrider acts to preserve this right of access. Texas Surfrider promotes the existence and enforcement of the Open Beaches Act. The Texas Surfrider's position on the Open Beaches Act is as follows: 1) Remove all encroachments and hazards that restrict beach access. 2) Adopt a policy of continual beach re-nourishment for all beaches suffering from erosion. 3) Object to any hard structure (breakwater, seawall or other structures) proposed for Texas coastline that may negatively impact the quality of Texas waves, beaches and wildlife. Texas Surfrider will continually monitor key political figures to prevent the weakening of this law. Texas Surfrider will monitor companies, organizations and government agencies for compliance with laws, both local and federal, which concern the quality of Texas coastal waters and beaches. If deemed necessary by the general membership, Texas Surfrider will take measures to make the general public aware of the situation and undertake possible protests and legal action. Research: Texas Surfrider promotes research into technology, which will improve Texas coastal recreation for all people without causing erosion, pollution or any detrimental impact on the coast. Texas Surfrider promotes research in water testing for harmful bacteria and contaminants in our oceans and waterways. Texas Surfrider supports the efforts of the Blue Water Task Force. Education: Texas Surfrider believes environmental education is essential to the future health and well being of Texas as a whole. Texas Surfrider seeks to develop and utilize educational materials that are informative, factual, proactive, synergistic and fun. Texas Surfrider will use materials such as Keepers of the Coast and other materials, which hold true to our mission for educating students, communities, our membership and the general public. Texas Surfrider will reach out to the community to educate and inform of the need for environmental awareness. Texas Surfrider is a grassroots organization effective through the participation of its members. Texas Surfrider activities emphasize the value of an involved membership.
