Thar She Blows: Nor'easter Blows Through NY
Sunday, December 7th, 2003
As the North Eastern states mimick a blizzard globe, Mick Stern and Joel Banslaben comment on conditions over the weekend.
Mick:
At around 10am there were perhaps a half dozen guys out at a popular spot in LB. Clean, very windy, some nice bombs and shacks were had. Double overhead on the sets. I've seen stronger drift/sweep. Didn't look too horrendous.
I'm still coughing up green loooooogies, and going to CR in less than a week. Tired of being sick, so I'm sitting this one out. Got some nice footage of the bay, the high tide marks at the beach, on the borrowed vidcam (Thanks, John for bringing it to midtown yesterday). If you don't have to travel far, it's worth paddling out.
No flooding from the bayside at all during high tide. Water made it up to the boardwalk in spots at high tide this morning. It really needs to be blowing NE/E for like three or four days in a row PLUS a full moon at the same time. We don't get a full moon till Tuesday (Aimee Mann rules) this month, and this storm will be outta here sometime tomorrow (Sunday), so I think we're gonna dodge the bullet once again this time around.
Joel:
I'd have to agree with Mick that the erosion and flooding on Saturday were not all of that bad. I was down there on Saturday during a very low tide (the strong wind out of the north seemed to be pushing the water even further from shore) and there were no signs of erosion. I would be interested to see what people observed on the bay side during high tide b/c that would seem to be the place that the water would be piling up. However, I must say the water itself was definitely feeling the effects of increased runoff as during my first duck dive I got a nice flavor of petroleum and septic waste. ummmmmm! Two days later I am still not sick so it probably wasn't as bad as its taste.
