MAKING WAVES, March 1998

In recognition of the importance of the ocean, of the marine environment and its life-giving resources, and of sustainable development, the United Nations has declared 1998 as the International Year of the Ocean.
The intent of the International Year of the Ocean is to focus the attention of the public, governments and decision makers on the importance of the ocean and marine environment and highlight ways in which marine resources can be sustained through effective management.
The goal is to point out to a broad audience that:
  • Oceans are vital to life on earth
  • Oceans affect our daily lives
  • We affect oceans every day
  • Ocean resources are finite
  • Oceans are frontiers of exploration and discovery

The Surfrider Foundation is excited about this opportunity to get our message out to more people on an international scale and are working on many exciting events for 1998:
  • Beach Boys 100 City World Tour- The Beach Boys will be the Surfrider Foundationžs official spokesmen for the International Year of the Ocean. Surfrider Foundation will be included in their 100 city symphonic tour.
  • The Surfrider Foundationžs Beach Boys Urgent Action Fund- Beach Boys will use their celebrity to help launch and fund a general „war chestū for Chapter/National legal, legislative and program development.
  • MOM III-Following the success of MOM I and MOM II, Music For Our Mother Ocean III will be released. Pearl Jam has already committed to doing an original song for the project.
  • NASA -Astonaut Rick Linnehan plans to promote the Surfrider Foundation and the International Year of the Ocean during the Space Shuttle mission scheduled for Spring of 1998.
  • Continue our National and International campaigns to protect water quality against pollution and protect waves as a natural resource.
  • Continue to fight against coastal habitat destruction and beach erosion .
  • Raise awareness of the general public to the oceanžs role in balance of nature and global climate change.
