At the personal invitation of one of The Beach Boys and Surfrider Foundation Advisory Board member Bruce Johnston, and former World Surfing Champion Shaun Tomson, on Saturday, December 13, 1997 we gathered in Santa Barbara, California to celebrate the holidays and for an early kick-off for the 1998 United Nations' proclaimed International Year of the Ocean. After learning more about the formidable challenges facing the Surfirder Foundation, Bruce and Shaun saw this as an opportunity to raise critically needed funding,and thus The Beach Boys Urgent Action Fund of the Surfrider Foundation was launched. The Beach Boys will be Surfrider Foundation spokesmen during the International Year of the Ocean and will continue to help us substantially fund The Beach Boys Urgent Action Fund of the Surfrider Foundation. Our special thanks go to Shaun, Bruce and his wife Harriet, for being such tremendous advocates on behalf of the Surfrider Foundation. |
