Long Beach may be doing a study on reconfiguring a portion of the Long Beach breakwater, but the federal government isn’t going to read it any time soon.
That’s because a $30,000 appropriation to cover the Army Corps of Engineers’ review of the study Long Beach is paying for is not in the upcoming federal budget.

Come to the Long Beach Chapter's monthly get-together and hear about the Marine Life Protection Act and how it is being implemented in Southern California.
The Mrine Life Protection Act--or MLPA--is a state law that requires establishing a "network" of marine protected areas in our near-shore waters from Oregon to the Mexican border. These marine protected areas offer heightened protection for special places--much like or National Parks protect spcial places on land.
Stefanie Sekich and Joe Geever from the Surfrider Foundation National Office will give a brief overview of what the law requires and how local citizens can get involved in the process of identifying special places for inclusion in the statewide network.
This will be a brief presentation with lots of time left for questions and answers, as well as open discussion. To learn more about the MLPA and the process for implementing this law in Southern California, go to: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa/
The Surfrider Foundation's Long Beach Chapter had a major success this past week at the June 17th Long Beach City Council meeting. The City voted to move forward on a contract to prepare the Reconnaissance Study (on the economic benefits of reconfiguring the LB Breakwater).
The Long Beach Chapter of Surfrider Foundation is a unique chapter in that we're one of the only chapters to be located at a beach without waves! That's right, no waves. You may ask yourself how can the entire coastline of the City of Long Beach, California which is home to the USA's second largest international commercial sea port have "No Waves"?
