State of the Beach Surfrider Internship
Summer 2009

The Surfrider Foundation seeks a graduate student for Dillon Henry Memorial Internship to work on Surfrider's State of the Beach report, assisting with research for the 2010 report that will focus on the threats to free public access along the coasts of the United States.

State of the Beach:
Every year since 2000 the Surfrider Foundation has published a print summary and has updated our online State of the Beach report, which evaluates state coastal zone management agencies on their information availability and the status of critical "beach health indicators."

The intern will conduct general research work for the 2010 State of the Beach report as well as specific research on the "beach access" beach health indicator, which will be the report's focus for 2010. The intern will generate a literature review, conduct dialogue with Surfrider chapter activists and "experts", and research indicator metrics to fine-tune our beach access beach health indicator.

Because individuals need access to beaches in order to enjoy them, beach access is probably the most important indicator in determining the number of people who can enjoy beaches. The intern will update information regarding the amount of beach access points in each coastal state, as well as the extent to which beach access information (signs, maps, guides) is readily available to the public. The intern will also gather information regarding the presence of existing or potential threats to beach access in the form of access restrictions (physical or legal), coastal modifications, future climate change impacts or other factors.

All previous State of the Beach reports were developed with the help of graduate students. To check out our current report visit: www.surfrider.org/stateofthebeach
